The cover retracts into a canister at the bulkhead on sealed ball bearings, driven by an electric motor. An electromagnetic brake holds it at any point along the rails, so you are not choosing between fully open and fully closed — you cover what needs covering and leave the rest of the bed open. Long items stay accessible while everything ahead of them stays dry.
You get two ways to run it: the included remote key fob, or controls built into the driver's side bed rail. The fob also switches an integrated LED strip that lights the bed, which is the difference between finding what you need at a trailhead at 9pm and emptying the whole bed onto the ground.

Measure before you order. Bed length is taken from the bottom of the bulkhead to the tailgate opening. Every Lightning left the factory with the 5 ft 7 in bed, so this is the correct cover for the truck as built — but confirm if yours has been modified.
