Uber and Rivian have launched a landmark $1.25 billion partnership to deploy up to 50,000 fully autonomous R2 robotaxis by 2031. Starting in 2028, the fleet will debut in San Francisco and Miami before expanding to 25 cities across North America and Europe. The vehicles will be powered by Rivian’s advanced third-generation autonomy stack, featuring a comprehensive suite of 11 cameras, five radars, and LiDAR.

This collaboration allows Uber to secure a leading role in the autonomous mobility market while providing Rivian with a massive capital injection and a real-world "data flywheel" to refine its self-driving software. By integrating these electric SUVs exclusively into the Uber platform, both companies aim to accelerate the transition to Level 4 autonomy and scale driverless ride-hailing globally.
