RJ Scraring Teases R2X and Other R2 Variants

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe recently confirmed that the company is developing several undisclosed variants of the R2 electric SUV, aiming to capitalize on the flexibility of its new manufacturing plant in Georgia. During an interview, Scaringe specifically teased the "R2X" name, suggesting a high-performance or off-road trim, before catching himself to avoid an official premature announcement. This move signals Rivian’s intent to diversify its mid-size platform, much like it has with the R1 series, to capture a broader range of market segments.

The expansion is supported by a strategic shift at the Georgia facility, where Rivian has consolidated its buildout into a single larger phase with an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles. This increased scale is intended to lower production costs and accelerate the path to profitability. In addition to potential performance models and "RAD Edition" trims, Scaringe hinted that the platform could support other body styles, such as a smaller R2T pickup, ensuring the R2 lineup remains a central pillar of Rivian’s mass-market growth and its autonomous vehicle partnerships.
