Rivian has officially commenced production of its highly anticipated R2 SUV, with the first customer deliveries, for Rivian employees, scheduled to begin this month. This milestone marks a critical transition for the electric vehicle manufacturer as it shifts from producing high-end, low-volume models like the R1T and R1S toward a more accessible, mass-market platform. To achieve this, Rivian streamlined its manufacturing processes, utilizing die castings and simplified suspension systems to reduce production costs by more than 50% compared to its previous generation of vehicles.
The initial rollout will focus on the high-performance "Launch Package" variant, which is priced at $57,990 and features a dual-motor configuration with an estimated 330-mile range. Rivian plans to follow this with a staggered release of more affordable trims, including a $53,990 Premium version late this year and a $45,000 base model slated for 2027. By targeting the mid-size SUV segment, Rivian aims to broaden its customer base and achieve positive gross profit margins by the end of 2026.
