The Rivian R2 and Tesla Model Y offer distinct takes on the electric SUV. While the 63.9" tall Model Y focuses on sleek aerodynamics, the R2 is a 3-inch taller "true SUV" with 9.6 inches of ground clearance—beating Tesla's 6.0 inches for off-road utility. Despite being 2.7 inches shorter in length, the R2’s boxy shape provides 90.1 cu ft of cargo space, outclassing the Model Y’s 76 cu ft.

Most notably, the R2 has closed the technical gap. The R2 Performance delivers 109 MPGe and a 328-mile range, surpassing the Model Y Performance's 104 MPGe and 306-mile range despite the R2 being 370 lbs heavier. While Tesla maintains a faster peak charge (250 kW vs. 217 kW), the R2’s superior volume and efficiency make it a formidable challenger.
