Spring 2026 - First Deliveries Expected (Performance Variant)

    Designed for Everyday Adventure

The R2 continues Rivian’s distinctive design language while introducing a slightly smaller footprint that makes it easier to maneuver in urban environments without sacrificing capability. With seating for five and a versatile cargo area, the R2 is expected to balance daily practicality with weekend adventure readiness.

Like the R1 platform, Rivian is designing the R2 with smart storage solutions, including a front trunk and flexible interior configurations that support road trips, outdoor gear, and active lifestyles.

    Powertrain Options and Performance

Rivian plans to offer multiple drivetrain configurations for the R2, giving buyers flexibility based on performance and efficiency preferences. Early information suggests options ranging from a single-motor rear-wheel-drive setup to dual-motor and tri-motor all-wheel-drive systems.

Max range is specified at 345 miles on the RWD configuration (ETA 2027), helping the R2 maintain Rivian’s reputation for long-distance capability while remaining practical for everyday use.  The Premium and Performance variants (ETA 2026) are rated at a max of 330 miles with 20" and 21" on-road wheels and tires.  The Performance variant with 20" off-road tires is rated at 307 miles.  Zero to sixty will zip by in 3.6 seconds with the Performance model in 21" street tires configuration, or 3.6 seconds with the 20" off-road tires.  The Premium spec will cover 0-to-60 in 4.6 seconds and the Standard spec comes in at a respectable 5.9 seconds.

The suspension will be a traditional steel coil spring and hydraulic shock absorber format.  This is a departure from the R1 which features a 4-corner air shock suspension.

    Interior Technology

The screen layout is similar to R1, looking to include a 12.3" driver-centric screen and the 15.3" center infotainment touchscreen.   Rivian's stance against including Apple CarPlay / Android Auto / SiriusXM is expected to continue - will not be offered in R2.  The interior will get a 'glove box', something you won't find on R1.

USB-C ports will be integrated for both front and rear seating locations.   The Rivian Torch flashlight returns in R2, tucked in the door panel like R1.

The steering wheel features thumb dials on both sides, which we have personally tested on pre-production vehicles and must say the haptic feedback (rolling resistance and vibration) makes for easy use - no need to 'take your eyes off the road', the feedback is touch sensory based.

Interior finishes - similar to R1, stylish colors, bio-based upholstry and upcycled woodgrains.

Also new to R2 is the pop-out rear quarter windows and the rear glass rolls down into the tailgate (aka opens).   And the rear seats feature a center storage drawer.

    Interior Options

The R2 includes a classic Rivian spec, blending wood and textile accents.  Costal Cloud Signature = Open and airy, the crisp tones of cool and cloudy coastal sky are warmed with upcycled birch wood and soft textile accents. Black Signature Crater = Inspired by the dynamic dark tones of volcanic rock, this interior is crafted with upcycled birch wood and textile accents.  And for Standard variants only, Black Crater = Black Crater features dark volcanic tones, a light and airy headliner and natural fiber accents, for an interior that feels both expansive and welcoming.

    Charging and Technology

The R2 batter spec is the same across variants, at 87.9 kWh.  The R2 will support fast charging using the North American Charging Standard (NACS), giving drivers access to a rapidly expanding charging ecosystem across North America. Rivian is also expected to bring many of the software and connectivity features from the R1 platform to the R2, including advanced driver assistance, over-the-air updates, and an intuitive digital interface.  Maximum charge rate is expected to be at least 220 kW - It doesn’t take much to add a whole lot of mileage when you’re out and about. Go from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes with a DC fast charger.

And...the charge port has been moved to the rear of the vehicle!  This was done to make the R2 more friendly at Tesla Supercharger stations.

    Estimated Pricing and Launch Timeline

Production is currently planned for 2026, with manufacturing expected to take place in Rivian’s U.S. facilities.

What It Means for the EV Sportline Community

The introduction of the R2 signals Rivian’s continued growth—and a larger community of electric adventure vehicles on the road. As the platform evolves, EV Sportline will be closely watching the R2’s final production specifications and mounting architecture to develop premium accessories designed to enhance capability, protection, and style.

As with the R1T and R1S, our focus will be on creating thoughtfully engineered upgrades that help owners get the most out of their vehicles both on and off the pavement.

Specifications and details may change prior to production. This page provides a general overview based on publicly available information about the upcoming Rivian R2.
