The upcoming Rivian R2 is drawing comparisons to the Tesla Model Y. However, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe claims it will be 'worlds different' compared to the Y with the R3 being more unique.
Starting at $45,000, the R2 is priced under the average new vehicle in the US. The R2 is slightly smaller than the popular Model Y, but its ability to perform as a SUV is very different. Taking Rivian's adventure and offroad EV DNA, the R2 can do things you expect for an SUV.
EV sales are still growing, but lacks a variety of choices in the market and more availability will boost EV demand. This is where the R3 comes in. With an impressive ground clearance of 220 mm, the R3 is a rally car at heart and will pull buyers from other markets with the R3X.
Rivian plans on building R2 models in early 2026 in Normal, IL. Capacity is expected to reach 215,000 with a 155,000 dedicated to the R2 and 85,000 to the R1.
