Rivian has officially begun producing validation units of the R2 SUV at its factory in Normal, Illinois. These vehicles are built using final production tooling, allowing the company to conduct critical crash testing and certification ahead of the official launch.
This milestone keeps Rivian on track for customer deliveries in the first half of 2026, with some estimates pointing to late Q1 or early Q2. By shifting production to its existing Illinois plant rather than waiting for its Georgia facility, Rivian has significantly accelerated the R2’s time-to-market.
Priced at roughly $45,000, the R2 is considered Rivian's "Model 3 moment." It is designed to be a mass-market competitor to the Tesla Model Y, moving the brand from a niche luxury manufacturer to a high-volume automaker.
